PATHOLOGY PROFESSOR CREATES NEW MUSIC GENRE: `SCIENTIFIC GOSPEL'

LA JOLLA, Calif. (Wireless Flash) -- A clinical pathology professor is attracting attention for his songs, not his science. Dr. Stephen Baird of the University of California at San Diego has created a new music genre which he calls "scientific gospel" -- in other words, music featuring offbeat topics like organ rejection. One of his songs is titled "T-Cell Re-circulation" and has lyrics like: "Silently, randomly/ T-Cells are roaming, roaming/ Through you and through me/ Spleen, gut and lymph nodes/ Are where they are homing." The doctor's ditties are designed to help students memorize lessons and he admits some students have told him they were only able to pass his class because they remembered his songs. Dr. Baird has been composing his scientific songs for 15 years but figured only the scientific community would be humming them. However, a record label found out about the songs and now, at age 54, Baird is releasing his first album: "Hallelujah! Evolution!". He admits it probably won't win him a Nobel Prize or a Grammy Award but he's willing to settle for a Gold Record.
