WHAT'S IN A NAME? PLENTY WHEN IT COMES TO HURRICANES

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (Wireless Flash) -- What's in a name? Plenty, at least when it comes to the names the World Meteorological Society has assigned to hurricanes this season. According to Minneapolis-based name researcher Bruce Lansky, the name of a hurricane may provide a clue to the storm's personality. One of the names on the list is "Gert," which Lansky says suggests a "tough old dame with a stormy personality." If Hurricane Gert materializes, he predicts it will be devastating. Other hurricanes with tough sounding names include "Lenny" - - which Lansky thinks will be strong but slow -- and "Jose," which he predicts will be devastating to urban areas. Some of the new hurricane names are wimpy-sounding: "Cindy," "Katrina" and "Harvey" are all sissy-sounding names which Lansky predicts will be cream puffs that won't do much damage. Although Lansky admits his research on hurricane names is preliminary, he thinks the Meteorological Society should replace any weak names with tough names so people won't underestimate the power of a hurricane.
