THE REAL SOY BOMB: SOYBEANS CAN CAUSE GAS

PORTLAND, Ore. (Wireless Flash) -- You've heard that soybeans can help menopausal women with their hot flashes -- well, now comes word they can also give your tummy hot flashes in the form of gas. According to naturopathic physician Dr. Tori Hudson, many soy products ferment in the stomach, creating a literal "soy bomb" in your belly. Hudson estimates about 10 percent of her patients suffer from soybean-induced gas by consuming soy products for health purposes. It may sound funny, but gut-gurgling "soy bombs" are a sign you're not digesting soy properly -- which means the food's not helping your health one bit. Hudson says you can counteract the gassy effects of soy by eating acidophilus, which keeps the soy from producing gas. Dr. Hudson is the author of the new book "The Woman's Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine" (Keats).
