SPIT AND POLISH: LAB EMPLOYEES EXAMINE SALIVA

STATE COLLEGE, Penn. (Wireless Flash) -- How'd you like to look at saliva all day and get paid for it? That's what's going on at a Penn State laboratory in State College, Pennsylvania, which functions as a sort-of clearing house for spit specimens from all around the world. The lab is headed up by Dr. Douglas Granger who, along with his colleagues, spend his days sloshing through vials of spit to determine everything from nicotine levels to whether a person has a serious illness. Researchers use the saliva lab for analysis because it is one of the only places in the world that has developed tests to analyze a person's spittle. Spit specialist Granger says saliva may become the preferred body fluid for medical testing in the future because it's less invasive to collect than blood.
