20TH ANNIVERSARY OF DISCO RECORD DEMOLITION

CHICAGO (Wireless Flash) -- The song "Disco Inferno" will take on a whole new meaning today (July 12) -- it's the 20th anniversary of the day Chicago residents burned hundreds of disco records at a White Sox baseball game. On July 12th, 1979, WLUP radio DJ Steve Dahl asked his rock 'n' roll fans to bring their unwanted disco records to that evening's White Sox doubleheader for a mass destruction. According to White Sox historian Rich Lindberg, the sold-out crowd went wild at the game, throwing records like frisbees and storming the field once the pile of disco records was exploded. The mob was so unruly that the second game had to be canceled and the White Sox forfeited the game. Lindberg says most baseball fans look at the event as a low point in White Sox history because it made Chicago fans look like a bunch of hooligans. Twenty years later, Steve Dahl is still on the air in Chicago, but at a competing station.
