COLLEGE FRESHMEN RECEIVE CRASH COURSE IN POVERTY

LEXINGTON, Va. (Wireless Flash) -- You think the college dorm featured in "Animal House" was bad? It's paradise compared to the accommodations waiting for some freshmen at a Virginia university. Thirty freshmen attending Washington & Lee University will be spending their first week of school in a slum as part of an "urban poverty project." Students will bunk in a dumpy public housing tract and be handed a small sum of money that to cover their breakfasts for the entire week. The students will also be required to beg for some of their meals or eat cast-off food donated to them from supermarkets. The university's dean of freshmen, Mark Dalhouse, says the unusual program is intended to expose privileged college kids to poverty and encourage them to help those who are less fortunate.
