LINCOLN WAS A LOSER WITH THE LADIES

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Wireless Flash) -- Abraham Lincoln may score points with presidential historians but he didn't score with the ladies. That's according to Lincoln himself, who admitted his lack of charm in a personal letter that's now being made public in the upcoming book "Lincoln On Lincoln" (University of Kentucky Press). In the note, the young Lincoln tells about the time he promised a lady friend he would marry her sister -- without having seen the sister beforehand. When Lincoln finally met his bride-to-be, he discovered she was a toothless tub of lard and, in his words, "weather-beaten." Although the future president wasn't too pleased, he proposed to her anyway -- and the old maid turned him down cold. With that blow to his ego, Lincoln admitted he'd never consider getting married again because he'd never be happy with anyone who's -- in his words -- "block-head enough to have me."
