STONEHENGE GETS A SURFER COUSIN: `SURFHENGE'

IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (Wireless Flash) -- England's Stonehenge now has a California cousin: a massive new sculpture called "Surfhenge." Surfhenge consists of four 16- to 20-foot-tall surfboard- shaped arches and is located on a pier just south of San Diego. Artist Malcolm Jones says the plexiglas structure is supposed to pay homage to the area's history as a surfing mecca - - but he'd also like it to be a mystical place for folks to gather. Jones hopes his Surfhenge will eventually become a place where modern-day witches will conduct ceremonies, just like witches now do at Stonehenge. But some Southern California witches aren't so keen on using the Surfhenge site. San Diego-based witch Kathryn Campbell says since witches prefer wooded or grassy areas for their rituals, the concrete pier and plexiglass structure probably wouldn't make for a good substitute.
