DOC SAYS MONTHLY PERIODS UNNECESSARY

BAHIA, Brazil (Wireless Flash) -- This should be music to many women's ears: a Brazilian gynecologist says monthly periods are unnecessary. Dr. Elsimar M. Coutinho says because of cultural changes, today's women spend more time having periods and less time being pregnant -- unlike their ancient ancestors. Coutinho, author of the new book "Is Menstruation Obsolete?" (Oxford University Press), claims monthly periods aren't natural or necessary for good health. In fact, he says monthly menstruation can actually be harmful and cause problems including anemia, endometriosis and, of course, the dreaded PMS. Coutinho claims most women would be healthier and happier if they suppressed their periods by taking birth control pills.
