JOCKEY SHORTS TURN 65 ON WEDNESDAY

KENOSHA, Wis. (Wireless Flash) -- Don't get your panties in a bunch, but this Wednesday (Jan. 19) marks the 65th anniversary of the day Jockey shorts first went on sale. On January 19, 1935, a Chicago department store began selling the briefs for 50 cents a pair and, despite a snow blizzard, the entire stock sold out within three hours. According to underwear historian John Cronce, the briefs were the brainchild of Jockey vice president Arthur Kniebler, who saw a postcard of a French man wearing a skimpy bathing suit and instantly saw a solution to a dreaded problem of the day: underwear bunching. Early Jockey advertisements even capitalized on the problem with the slogan, "Don't be a squirmer."
