WILL MR. CLEAN COME CLEAN ABOUT GAY RUMORS?

CHICAGO (Wireless Flash) -- Mr. Clean may be coming clean about his sexual orientation. Next Monday, the 42-year-old chrome dome advertising icon will launch mrclean.com, a website to answer questions from consumers -- but his publicist admits lots of people would rather ask him about his sex life than how to clean a countertop. Proctor & Gamble spokeswoman Jennifer Gunning says the company gets the gay question all the time and figures it's because Mr. Clean wears an earring and tight pants. That may make him look gay these days, but the advertising agency that created Mr. Clean in 1958 modeled him after the "classic look of a rugged sailor." Although Mr. Clean has yet to publicly comment about his sexual preference, Gunning says the new website may prepare a response for the inevitable gay questions -- possibly along the lines of "Don't ask, don't tell."
