`BACTERIA MOUTHWASH' PROMISES NO MORE CAVITIES

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Wireless Flash) -- Scientists are fighting fire with fire when it comes to dental cavities. A University of Florida researcher has developed a sort-of "bacteria mouthwash" that counteracts bacteria that cause cavities. Dr. Jeffrey Hillman says the mouth rinse coats the teeth with a type of bacterium that prevents the production of lactic acid -- the main cause of cavities. Just one application of the bacteria-laden solution will keep a person cavity-free forever because the bacteria keep reproducing once in the mouth. Interestingly enough, Dr. Hillman says sugar actually helps the bacteria spread so folks with a sweet tooth needn't feel so guilty. The new mouthwash must undergo FDA trials and tests before hitting the marketplace.
