SOY MAY NOT BE `SOY' GOOD AFTER ALL

AUCKLAND, N.Z. (Wireless Flash) -- Bad news for tofu eaters: soy may not be "soy" good for you after all. That's the word from environmental chemist Mike Fitzpatrick, who claims soy products have high amounts of natural toxins that can cause health problems. He says something called "isoflavones" in soy beans may interfere with hormone production in the thyroid, causing adults to have problems like lethargy, hair loss and weight gain. Fitzpatrick is also concerned that infants who drink soy-based formulas may suffer growth problems, goiter or damage to their reproductive organs from the toxins. Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for the United Soybean Board says soy formulas have been consumed for 60 years without any problems and there's no scientific proof eating soy beans will cause thyroid trouble.
