EARTH DAY BIRTHDAY

EARTH DAY BIRTHDAY

SEATTLE (Wireless Flash) -- Here's proof it's easy being green: Earth Day will celebrate its 30th birthday this Saturday (Apr. 22). Many of this year's celebrations will be festival-like gatherings in city parks, which is a far-cry from the crazy stunts people pulled to protest pollution on the first Earth Day. Denis Hayes, who coordinated activities for the very first Earth Day, says many activists held elaborate "funerals" for smog-producing cars and paraded around town in gas masks. The mayor of New York City even designated several "automobile free zones" to protest car pollution. This year the biggest Earth Day celebration will be a low-key, festival-like event in Washington D.C. hosted by Leonardo DiCaprio.
