HEAVY METAL MISUNDERSTOOD SAYS RESEARCHER

CHICAGO (Wireless Flash) -- Heavy metal fans, rejoice. A professor at DePaul University in Chicago claims heavy metal is bigger and better than ever, thanks to metal heads in the Third World. Dr. Deena Weinstein says many cultural know-nothings dismiss heavy metal as noise when it's simply modern folk music for urban males. Although bands like Poison and Motley Crue killed off heavy metal in mainstream America, Weinstein says it's still going strong in Brazil, Indonesia and Turkey. Third World rockers are now covering heavy metal tunes and even adding local touches such as Brazilian samba or middle Eastern scales. Weinstein's book, "Heavy Metal: The Music And Its Culture" (DaCapo Press), has just been released in paperback.
