WATER AND PAINKILLERS: DEADLY COMBINATION FOR RUNNERS

HOUSTON (Wireless Flash) -- Here's a bitter pill to swallow: The simple act of taking painkillers could be deadly for marathon runners. Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine say marathon runners who drink lots of water and regularly use over-the-counter painkillers such as ibuprofen run the risk of developing a deadly condition known as "hyponatremia." Victims of the disorder can accumulate excess fluid in their brains or lungs because the drugs impair the ability to excrete excessive water consumed while running. Researcher Dr. Juan Carlos Ayus says although the study just looked at marathon runners, it's possible the water/painkiller combination could also be deadly for other individuals into heavy exercising.
