90TH ANNIVERSARY OF FIRST FATHER'S DAY (JUN. 19)

SPOKANE, Washington (Wireless Flash) -- Have you ever wondered how the tradition of Father's Day started? It's all thanks to a woman named Sonora Louise Smart. Smart came up with the concept of Father's Day in 1910 as a way to honor her own father -- a Civil War veteran who raised his six children alone as a single parent. Although Father's Day is this Sunday, Monday will actually mark the 90th anniversary of the very first Father's Day, which was celebrated in a church run by YMCA ministers in Spokane, Washington. The idea spread quickly, but it wasn't officially proclaimed a holiday until 1971.
