WILL AMERICA SUFFER FROM `MAD ELK DISEASE'?

MADISON, Wis. (Wireless Flash) -- Europeans are currently having a cow over "Mad Cow Disease" but the United States may be next with a variation called "Mad Deer Disease." That's according to investigative journalist John Stauber who claims the U.S. meat industry has done a shoddy job of preventing "Mad Cow"-type diseases -- especially among deer or elk, which are butchered in the same facilities as cows. He claims as a result of the negligence, a deer and elk variation of "Mad Cow" is affecting as many as 20 percent of the wild deer population. Only 20 percent of Americans consume venison, but Stauber fears diseased deer are being made into sausage or fed to pigs intended for human consumption.
