THE MOST DUBIOUS DATA OF 2000

WASH. D.C. (Wireless Flash) -- A lot of statistics don't add up -- at least where the media's concerned. That's according to the Washington, D.C.-based Statistical Assessment Service, which recently did the math on various media claims for its annual "Dubious Data Awards." The top "Dubey" goes to the "New York Times," which claimed the North Pole was melting for the first time in 50 million years. In reality, the ice melts one out of 10 summers. Other "Dubey" winners include the British newspaper, "The Observer," which ran a story headlined "It's Apocalypse Now As World Boils Over."
