`AVENGERS' STAR WANTS UMBRELLAS NOT GUNS

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (Wireless Flash) -- TV's Avenger, Patrick Macnee, is telling the world to take a cue from him and start carrying an umbrella instead of a gun. Macnee's crime busting character, John Steed, was known for using an umbrella instead of a gun -- and it's pretty much the same story for Macnee. The actor is a WWII veteran and says he knows first-hand how a person changes for the worse when they hold a gun -- so now he's encouraging everyone to put down their guns and pick up an umbrella. Although he says he never actually killed anyone in the war, he still thinks it's better to put an umbrella in your hand rather than a gun. Macnee will be celebrating his 79th birthday February 6 by making a guest appearance on Frasier.
