‘CHATTANOOGA CHOO CHOO’ RECORDED 60 YEARS AGO TODAY (MAY 7)

BOULDER, Colo. (Wireless Flash) – This could be music to the ears of swing buffs: Today marks the 60th anniversary of the day the Glenn Miller Orchestra recorded “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” one of the biggest hits of the pre-rock era. On May 7, 1941, Miller and his band went into a studio to record the ditty, which was written by Harry Warren and Mack Gordon. The song turned out to be the biggest hit of its time, selling 1.2 million copies and holding the No. 1 spot for nine weeks in a row. The song later appeared in the movie, Sun Valley Serenade, and was nominated for the Best Song Oscar in 1941. “Chattanooga Choo Choo” also has the unique distinction of earning the first-ever Gold Record, which is now on display at the University of Colorado in Boulder.
