VET: PETS NEED SUNSCREEN TOO

TOPEKA, Kan. (Wireless Flash) – You aren’t the only one who needs to slather on the sunscreen this summer: Your pooch or pussycat should too. That’s the advice of veterinarian Dr. Blake Hawley, who says pets can get skin cancer if they spend too much time in the hot sun. He says hairless dogs and white-coated cats are especially prone to sunburn, and recommends pet owners coat their pet’s coats with a sun block that’s at least SPF 15. Dr Hawley – who works for Hill’s Pet Nutrition – says the best way to get your pet to sit still while putting on sunscreen is to put the sun block on your hand and pet the pooch or pussycat. At the other end of the spectrum, he says reptile pets like iguanas don’t need sunscreen and actually benefit from basking in the solar rays.
