THE TRUTH ABOUT LIE DETECTORS

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (Wireless Flash) – The truth about lie detectors is they can’t really tell whether a person is lying. According to physicist Alan P. Zelicoff, who works on national security and arms control at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico, there is no scientific proof that lie detectors works. In fact, what little research there is on the devices show they can register false positives in as many as 40 percent of cases. Zelicoff feels the U.S. government is wasting money by continuing to use lie detectors to detect spies among its ranks and says financial background checks are a much better way to determine whether an employee is a turncoat. He writes about lie detectors in the latest issue of Skeptical Inquirer.
