LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash) – Monday (Jul 16) marks a major event in baseball history: The 60th anniversary of the day Joe DiMaggio hit safely for his 56th game, setting a record that has yet to be broken. According to sports historian Dan Wheeler, it all ended for Joe the following day – and he blamed it on a cab driver who cursed the streak by shouting, “It’s going to end tonight. It’s over!” Afterwards, DiMaggio was so angry, he refused to take a taxi back to his hotel. However, the cabbie curse only affected DiMaggio for one game. The next game, he started a 17-game hitting streak.
