REAL ROBOTS HOPE TO BEAT HUMANS IN SOCCER

SEATTLE (Wireless Flash) – The fictional robots of A.I. are still playing in movie theaters, but the real robot McCoys will start playing on soccer fields next month. On August 2, “RoboCup 2001” will kick off in Seattle. It’s an international soccer competition where the players are autonomous robots that range in size from seven to 18 inches tall. The event is expected to draw 120 teams from around the world and the robots are required to think and move for themselves without the help of remote control. A spokeswoman says RoboCup’s goal is to create a team of soccer- playing robots capable of beating humans by the year 2050.
