SCALPEL...FORCEPS...BRA?!?

COON RAPIDS, Minn. (Wireless Flash) – Nurses at a Minnesota hospital are using bras to help women recover from heart surgery. Nurses at Mercy & Unity Hospital in Coon Rapids have developed a modified sports bra that eliminates the risk of wound infection in large-chested women who undergo cardiac surgery. The bras hold the breasts together, preventing their weight from stretching chest incisions, which can cause infection. Women who have heart surgery can’t wear regular bras right after the operations because they interfere with IV lines – but these bras have velcro straps and a front-closure that fits around the IV. The nurses are modifying off-the-shelf bras from a local WalMart, and they plan on sharing their bra-making tips with other hospitals.
