SCIENTISTS USING HUMAN WASTE FOR FERTILIZER
PARIS (Wireless Flash) If cow manure is good for plants, why not human manure? Scientists at the European Space Agency are currently working on a system that would convert human waste into fertilizer to grow food during long space journeys. The so-called Micro-Ecological Life Support Alternative (MELISSA) would also recycle astronaut waste into water and oxygen. Researchers hope to get the system up and running by 2005.
