WIENERMOBILE CELEBRATES 65TH BIRTHDAY

MADISON, Wis. (Wireless Flash) – Hot dog! The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile is celebrating its 65th birthday. The giant hot dog-shaped vehicle made its debut in November 1936 as a 13- foot-long metal wiener that tooled around Chicago touting the Oscar Mayer brand. According to Wienermobile manager Russ Whitacre, the first model had a top speed of about 35 miles per hour, had room for only one person and didn’t even have a windshield. Today’s Wienermobile’s wiener has grown to 14 feet, can accommodate six passengers comfortably and has a spiffy V-8 engine. Whitacre proudly refers to the new model as “The Lexus of Wienermobiles” and he currently oversees a fleet of eight. To celebrate the 65th anniversary, the Wienermobiles are touring America handing out hot dog-shaped birthday cake.
