MERRILEE RUSH ADMITS SHAGGY’S ‘ANGEL’ IS CLEANER THAN THE ORIGINAL

SEATTLE, Wash. (Wireless Flash) – Shaggy’s hit, “Angel,” is getting mixed reviews from the woman who sang the original version in 1968. Merrilee Rush, whose version of “Angel In The Morning” was a Top 10 hit, says she loves the rhythm of Shaggy’s version but says its the first time an earlier version has been “...raunchier than the rap remake.” The 57-year-old Rush says that, back in the ’60s, her “Angel” caused a lot of controversy because it told the story of a woman who, after sleeping with a guy, tells him “You don’t have to marry me.” She says Shaggy has just turned the lyrics into a love song, but she says she’d still be happy to sit in with him any time he wants.
