OLD SHOVEL COLLECTION GETS NEW DIGS

EASTON, Mass. (Wireless Flash) – An historic collection of old shovels is getting some new digs. The 811 shovels – one of which dates back to 1774 – are part of a history archive at Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts, and, up until recently, were buried in the basement of an old house on campus. That caused some difficulty for historians who wanted to dig into the collection, because they had to climb down a winding staircase and squeeze through narrow corridors to examine the old shovels and the documents related to them. But now the college is giving the shovels their place in the sun inside a newly-renovated building with plenty of room, modern display cases and a special research room. The shovels officially broke ground on their new digs last Friday and university officials are hoping the new location will bring more attention to the shovel museum.
