RESEARCHERS DEVELOP THE ‘SMART BANDAGE’

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash) – Researchers at the University of Rochester say they’re a step closer to developing a bandage that can tell you if a wound has been infected with dangerous bacteria. It’s called the “Smart Bandage” and it contains a tiny silicon wafer that changes color when it comes in contact with bacteria. Scientists say right now the color change is so slight that it requires a microscope to view it, but over the next three years they hope to improve it to the point it can be easily seen on an adhesive bandage. By then they say they hope to expand the smart bandage to identify bacteria including salmonella, listeria and enteropathogenic E. coli.
