HOW TO AVOID ‘DASHBOARD DIARRHEA’

DALLAS (Wireless Flash) – Driving a long distance to visit your relatives this Thanksgiving? Well, be careful what you bring along to eat in the car – you could end up with a case of “dashboard diarrhea.” According to the American Dietetic Association, drivers risk food poisoning by consuming perishable items that have been sitting in vehicles for more than two hours. That includes fancy-schmancy coffee drinks and even bottled water, according to spokeswoman Barbara Gollman. She says anything that is moist can grow gut-wrenching bacteria within two hours outside of a refrigerator – including lunch meat and carrot sticks. The risk of getting sick is also increased on a road trip because folks don’t wash their hands as much as they would at home. To avoid coming down with dashboard diarrhea, Gollman suggest sticking to dry goods like chips and candy bars or bring along a cooler for your goodies.
