UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR: ‘HOMEWORK OVER THANKSGIVING IS UNFAIR’

MUNCIE, Ind. (Wireless Flash) – It sounds like dissension in the ranks, but a university professor is speaking out against teachers who give homework over the Thanksgiving weekend. Larry Smith, chairman of elementary education at Ball State University, says it’s unfair for youngsters in K-12 grades to have to do homework over the holiday weekend. Smith says the four-day holiday is meant to be a break for kids to spend time traveling and relaxing with their families. Teachers who give homework just want to “give the impression they are rigorous,” says Smith, but that is just “not thoughtful.”
