‘Iron Chef’: The Future Of Classical Music

SAN DIEGO (Wireless Flash) – It sounds half-baked but a symphony conductor thinks classical music needs to be more like the Japanese cable show, Iron Chef. Jung-Ho Pak, the artistic director of the San Diego Symphony, thinks the best way to make average Joes and Janes hunger for classical music is by having chefs onstage with the orchestra cooking in time with the music. Pak figures if folks can smell and taste the mussels and garlic eaten in French bistros by composers like Debussy and Ravel, they’ll stomach the music much better. That’s not all. Pak figures if folks ate Viennese food while listening to Mozart music and Strauss symphonies, they would develop even more of a taste for culture. Although Pak thinks combining classical music and classic food will keep the music alive, it’s only food for thought. He admits most orchestras won’t be putting a kitchen staff next to the string section anytime soon.
