Record Exec: ‘The Ramones Are Greedy’

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash) – The Ramones might be considered the godfathers of punk, but one record company exec says they should be considered the godfathers of greed. Johnny Chiba’s indie label, Radical Records, will soon release a Ramones tribute CD, Ramones Forever, which showcases European punk and lo-fi bands. His compilation will go head to head with the forthcoming disc We’re A Happy Family, another Ramones tribute album which features covers by hit-making rockers like Rob Zombie and Eddie Vedder. Chiba says even though his record features actual punk rather than top-40 rock, he thinks the Ramones will prefer the other album simply because it will make them more money in sales. He’s especially critical of Dee Dee, who he says is greedy and “...just happy if he gets his two dollars per record.” Chiba says one Ramone who WOULD like his tribute, which hits stores May 28, is Joey Ramone, who passed away a year ago today (Apr 15).
