East Meets West in Indian Hip-Hop Workout

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash) – Talk about a culture clash: A New York-based fitness instructor has invented a new form of aerobics by crossing hip-hop with a traditional Indian farmers’ dance known as bangra. Workout queen Sarina Jain – who’s been called the “Indian Jane Fonda” – teaches 13 classes a week on her routine, called the “Masala Bangra Hip-Hop Workout.” She says she was inspired by DJs and hip-hoppers who use the steel-drum- sounding bangra music in their songs, including the Missy Elliot hit “Get Ur Freak On.” Jain has just released an instructional video on the hybrid hip-hop moves where’s she’s dressed in traditional Indian garb that resembles MC Hammer’s trademark baggy pants. She says one day she’d like to collaborate with some big time hip-hop artists on music to accompany her workouts.
