East Meets West in Indian Hip-Hop Workout
NEW YORK (Wireless Flash) Talk about a culture clash: A New York-based fitness instructor has invented a new form of aerobics by crossing hip-hop with a traditional Indian farmers dance known as bangra. Workout queen Sarina Jain whos been called the Indian Jane Fonda teaches 13 classes a week on her routine, called the Masala Bangra Hip-Hop Workout. She says she was inspired by DJs and hip-hoppers who use the steel-drum- sounding bangra music in their songs, including the Missy Elliot hit Get Ur Freak On. Jain has just released an instructional video on the hybrid hip-hop moves wheres shes dressed in traditional Indian garb that resembles MC Hammers trademark baggy pants. She says one day shed like to collaborate with some big time hip-hop artists on music to accompany her workouts.
