A Former Studio 54 Doorman Remembers

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash) – Friday (Apr. 26) is the 25th anniversary of the day legendary New York nightclub Studio 54 opened. Although club owner Steve Rubell died in 1989, one man who can still dish the dirt on Studio 54 is former doorman Baird Jones. He says the club’s infamously selective door policy created crowds that, on one occasion, almost trampled Andy Warhol and Bianca Jagger when they were escorted in by nine bouncers. Jones also says Rubell had all sorts of bizarre rules. For instance, he loved it when patrons stripped down to the buff in the club – but didn’t want them to take off their shoes. Rubell also refused to let in women in groups of two, because he was convinced that meant they were cops. Jones says the rules got so bizarre that doormen started smuggling people in – but Rubell would just throw them out again.
