4,000 Runners to Ramble Past the ‘James Joyce Ramble’

DEDHAM, Mass. (Wireless Flash) – Not many people know who author James Joyce was, but about 4,000 runners will act like they do this Sunday (Apr. 28) in Dedham, Massachusetts. That’s when the Joyce James Ramble will be held, a 10K run for the Irishman who wrote the 1922 book Ulysses – which is the story of a day in the life of a salesman named Leopold Bloom. Along the route of the run, actors and actresses will be dressed up as characters from Joyce’s various works and will perform scenes from his books as the joggers run past them. Although the runners won’t catch more than about four lines as they jog by, race director Martin Hanley says that’s OK because four lines is the most the average American ever hears of Joyce’s work anyway. But what makes the Ramble unique, according to Hanley, is that it’s the only theatrical opportunity where the audience moves faster than the actors.
