Anorexia: The Musical

Anorexia: The Musical

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash) – A New York playwright is making theater therapeutic by turning her daughter’s five-year bout with anorexia into a musical. Yvonne Adrian says the show, titled Normal, has helped exorcise the pain of watching her now-recovered daughter almost waste away. Co-writer Cheryl Stern admits anorexia is a heavy topic for a musical, but says it works well as a black comedy because “...funny stuff happens even in really dark times.” The musical features songs like “Cooking for the Starving,” a vaudeville-style number set in a grocery store. There’s also a rebellious, Britney Spears-style pop song, “Pretty to the Bone,” which the daughter sings to defiantly defend her anorexia. Composer Tom Kochan, who also writes music for As The World Turns, hopes the musical breaks some ground and attracts attention of a big-time producer to bring it to Broadway.
