Artist: ‘New Yorkers Are Back to Being Unfriendly’

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Wireless Flash) – New York experienced a sense of unity following Sept 11. but a lot of people are now wondering if it’s gone. Well, Brooklyn-based performance artist Carrie Dashow says “Yes” – and she has proof. Back 1999, Dashow set out to say hello to and get hellos back from a million people. Most of the time, those hellos weren’t exactly easy to get from grumpy workaholic New Yorkers. However, Dashow says as soon as Sept. 11 happened, New York “was in a state of euphoria” and everyone she met returned her hellos and many of them even struck up neighborly conversations. However, nine months later, Dashow says the euphoria’s faded, though she can’t figure out whether the friendliness of the city has gone back to normal or whether it’s gotten even worse.
