Millions At Risk For ‘Beauty Parlor Stroke’

NEWARK, N.J. (Wireless Flash) – Be careful! Leaning back into a sink could lead to a hairy problem: “beauty parlor stroke.” Researchers at New Jersey Medical School in Newark say the dreaded “beauty parlor stroke” usually occurs when you get a shampoo at the beauty parlor with your head in the sink. Doctors say the position changes brain blood flow, causing dizziness, light-headedness and other stroke-like symptoms minutes after the shampoo. The average age of participants in the “beauty parlor stroke” study was 72, but doctors say they’re shocked at how easily the shampoo seat position brings on symptoms. However, there is good news. Study director Dr. Patrick Foye says some neck support devices minimize dizziness. The study appears in the latest edition of American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
