I
was in the courtyard of the elementary school that I didn't go to when
I was a child, the rival school. It wasn't night time but it was kind of
dark and not in a cloudy way either. Just dark. Work crews were repainting
the building. A new floor had been added to the 2-story structure and the
new addition's design was slightly incongruous with that of the original's.
Cranes and scaffolding were everywhere. One particularly tall crane was
dangerously leaning over the courtyard from the other side of the building,
looking like it could topple any minute. I
was staring at it when a gigantic robot loomed over the horizon. It was
a behemoth straight out of the covers of old sci-fi pulps. Its enormous
size was apparent when, with just a few steps it was upon us. I jumped
under the dank underbelly of the building as a giant foot came down on
a smaller adjacent building. I thought I'd be safe where I was hiding as
long as it didn't see me, and it couldn't possibly see me because it was
so tall. But apparently the robot was always accompanied by these smaller
robots that scurried about its feet in manic, insect-like movements. They
looked like spiders, with squat bodies and multiple legs. The smallest
one was about the size of a hand. In the darkness these things crawled
over me like the spiders that they resembled. They were very fast.
