"Hey! An artist is only as good as the people around him. You've gotta work with people who inspire you, and over the years I've been lucky to have worked with a couple of the great ones. Jim Vallance and Mutt Lange are the first two that come to mind." "Let's be honest...Mutt could work with my mom and have a hit record (laughs). We come from similar backgrounds and with similar musical interests. When we first started writing together, it was obvious that we were going to make a good record together...the fact that we've carried on since that is due to the fact that we've had some great moments making music, not to mention a few dodgy Indian curries!" Just in the process of recording the new release, Adams spent time in Jamaica and the sultry south of France with co-writer Robert John"Mutt" Lange. "It just seemed like a good way of recording a record" he says. "I was looking for a more organic sound...and the way we did it was incredibly simple. It was like a home studio, only away from home". The idea of spending months in the sunny climes of the Carribean and Cannes doesn't exactly sound too demanding. But for Adams, a self-avowed worker bee who can't stop touring, work is work. "I know if I didn't work at it, I'd never get anything done. We were a couple of serious guys -- there wasn't a lot of laughs in the studio". Adams says the relationship he and Lange share is more like a brotherhood than a business partnership. But working with someone who's been described as a "control freak" couldn't be easy. "When tension starts to build, we let it blow...", he says. "But this time I trusted (Lange) in the studio more than ever and I sat back more". June 1993: Aside from writing tunes with Mutt Lange in London, Bryan and Mutt attended the annual five-day country music Fan Fare extravaganza held in Nashville, Tennessee each year. Bryan was invited on stage by Billy Ray Cyrus and says he was extremely embarrassed due mostly to the fact that he didnt know his tune, Achy Breaky Heart! Had a laugh all the same. June 1989: Teams up with famed producer/composer Mutt Lange (The Cars, Def Leppard) at Londons Olympic Studios to write more material for the upcoming LP. My best songs I wrote with Mutt Lange. He has a special sense of humour which I like. I'm a team-player. (thanks to Jack -zephyr 102) |
