The Greatest NFL Team!
I consider myself a student of the game and I think you'll find this a fair representation. My starters are indicated by the asterik (*) symbols. If you want to send me your version of the All-Time Great Football team Click Here
- Head Coach -*John Madden* or Vince Lombardi or George Allen or Don Shula or Tom Landry.
Contemporary Head Coach To Watch - Mike Shanahan.
- QB - *Joe Montana* or John Elway or Johnny Unitas or Joe Namath. Nobody could pick apart a defense like super Joe (Namath). Pick any defense in NFL
history and with protection, Joe would dissect it. John (Elway) was the best with a game on the line in the last few minutes. Johnny Unitas defined the QB position and Joe (Namath) would've probably been the greatest QB of all time if it wasn't for his bad knees.
Arguments could also be made for Steve Young or Warren Moon or Fran Tarkenton or Roger Staubach or Dan Fouts or Dan Marino or Bret Farve or Sammy Baugh or Terry Bradshaw or Bart Starr or Bob Griese or Sid Luckman or Otto Graham or Sonny Jurgensen or Jim Zorn or Jim Kelly or Ken Stabler or Ken Anderson or Bert Jones or Kurt Warner or Doug Williams or Len Dawson or John Hadl or John Brodie or Roman Gabriel or Jim McMahon Jim Hart or Boomer Esiason or Y.A. Tittle or Neil Lomax.
Contemporary QB's To Watch - Brian Griese, Peyton Manning, Mark Brunell, Bret Farve, Donovan McNabb, Jeff Garcia, Aaron Brooks, Rich Gannon, Michael Vick, Tom Brady, and Drew Bledsoe.
- FB - *Jim Brown* or Earl Campbell. Earl and Jim had the combination of power and speed unlike any other fullbacks.
In addition, arguments could also be made for Jim Taylor or Larry Csonka or Bronko Nagurski or John Riggins or Franco Harris or Sam Cunningham.
Contemporary FB's To Watch - Mike Alstott, Tony Richardson, and William Henderson.
- HB - *Walter Payton* or Gale Sayers or Bo Jackson or Barry Sanders. Consider that Walter tallied up all his stats for most of his career without having the benefit of a good offensive line. Gale was probably the best open field runner. Barry had the best moves and most advanced shiftiness, and if it wasn't for Bo's premature career ending hip injury, he probably would've been the best HB of all time.
Arguments could also be made for Emmit Smith or Marshall Faulk or Eric Dickerson or O.J. Simpson or Marcus Allen or Tony Dorsett or Marshall Faulk or Willie Gallimore or Roger Craig or Red Grange or Hugh McElhenney or Stump Mitchell or Wilbert Montgomery or Chuck Muncie or Chuck Foreman.
Contemporary HB's to Watch - Ahman Green, Corey Dillon, Edgerin James, K. Tomlison, Priest Holmes, Duce Staley, D. McAllister, Ricki Williams, C. Portis, Fred Lane, Eddie George, Emmit Smith, Mike Anderson, Shawn Alexander, and Curtis Martin.
- WR - *Jerry Rice* or *Lynn Swann* or *Paul Warfield* or *Lance Alworth*. Jerry, Lynn, Paul, and Lance are the most talented wide receivers to ever play the game.
Arguments could also be made for Steve Largent or Harold Carmichael or Don Maynard or Art Monk or Charley Taylor or Charlie Joiner or Tim Brown or John Jefferson or James Lofton or Jimmy Smith or Cris Carter or Michael Irvin or Jon Stallworth or Roy Greene or Mike Quick or Ken Burroughs or Cliff Branch or Fred Belitnokoff or Bob Hayes or Roger Carr or Marlin Briscoe or Stanley Morgan or Willie Gault or Raymond Berry or Don Hutson or "Crazy Legs" Hirsch or Andre Rison or John Gilliam or Drew Pearson or Otis Taylor or Wes Chandler or Wesley Walker or Mark Duper or Mark Clayton or Andre Reed or Don Bebee or Ernst Givins or Haywood Jeffries or Isaac Curtis or Mel Gray or Ricky Sanders or Gary Clark or Ahmad Rashad or John Taylor.
Contemporary WR's to watch - Jimmy Smith, Rod Smith, Marvin Harrison, Randy Moss, Eric Moulds, Peerless Price, Isaac Bruce, Tim Brown, Jerry Rice, Tory Holt, Musin Muhaamad, Armani Toomer, Daryl Jackson, Orlando Gadsen, Terrell Owens, David Boston, Joe Horn, James McKnight, Donald Hayes, Derrick Alexander, and Curtis Conway.
- TE - *Kellen Winslow* or Jackie Smith or John Mackey or Mike Ditka. Kellen redefined the TE position, he played with heart and soul. Jackie may have been the all around greatest TE. John had tremendous speed and Mike had tremendous strength and toughness.
Arguments could also be made for Russ Francis or Ozzie Newsome or Mark Bavarro or Shannon Sharpe or Dave Casper or Jay Novacek or Todd Christensen or Steve Jordan or Charlie Sanders or Riley Odomes or Rich Caster.
Contemporary TE's to watch - Tony Gonzalez, J. Shockey, Todd Heap, Freddie Jones, Franck Wycheck, Ken Dilger, David Sloan, and Wesley Walls.
- LOT - *Art Shell* and *Anthony Munoz*. Art and Anthony could equalize any Defensive End.
Arguments could also be made for Gary Zimmerman or Joe Jacoby or Winston Hill or Jumbo Elliot or Roger Finnie or Richmond Webb or Bruce Armstrong or Mark Tuinei.
Contemporary LOT's To Watch - Tony Boselli, William Roaf, and Jonathan Ogden.
- LOG - *Gene Upshaw* or Larry Allen or Russ Grimm or Bruce Matthews. Gene had it all, speed, power, and finesse. Larry Allen may surpass Gene, time will tell. Larry definitely has any OG in the strength category -- he can bench press 700 lbs! Russ was probably the strongest link in arguably the best offensive line ever ("The Hogs") and Bruce has played in an offensive line for 19 or 20 years!
Arguments could also be made for Bob Young or Nate Newton or Frank Kilroy or Steve Wisnewski or Randall McDaniel or Bob Kuchenberg.
Contemporary LOG's To Watch - Larry Allen.
- C - *Mike Webster* and Dwight Stephenson. Not once did I ever see anyone outmuscle either Mike or Dwight.
Arguments could also be made for Jim Otto or Damatti Dawson or Jeff Bostic or Jim Langer or Tom Nalen or Dave Dalby or Jim Ringo.
Contemporary C's To Watch - Tom Nalen, Barret Robbins, Kevin Mawae, Jeff Christy, and Tim Ruddy.
- ROG - *Larry Little* or *Jim Parker* or Tom Mack. Jim had it all (strength, speed, power, good feet, great hands) yet he had one glaring weakness -- he couldn't handle trash talking (i.e. Doug Atkins), therefore, how would he fair vs. many of the big mouth players of today? Larry had it all just like Jim, however, he was tougher mentally, therefore, I'd probably give Larry the nod. Tom was Mr. Consistency and he played in 8 or 9 Pro Bowls, yet oddly enough no one seems to remember him.
Arguments could also be made for Conrad Dobler or John Hannah or Joe DeLamillare or Jerry Kramer or Dennis Harrah. Conrad was a dirty player with a lot of dog in him, but boy, could he get another player out of the game.
Contemporary ROG's To Watch - Will Shields, Tre Johnson, and David Dixon.
- ROT - *Forrest Gregg* or *Erik Williams* or Dan Dierdorf or Jackie Slater. Forrest would be a little under weight by today's standards, however, he may have been the greatest at his position. Erik before his car accident was unbeatable. Dan may be the most underrated ROT of all time and Jackie was the combination of strength, durability, and intelligence.
Arguments could also be made for Harris Barton or Bob St. Clair or Bob Brown or Rayfield Wright or Roosevelt Parks.
Contemporary ROT's To Watch - Willie Anderson, Kyle Turley, and James "Big Cat" Williams.
- K - *Jan Stenereud* or Morten Anderson or Mark Moseley or Jim Bakken or Tom Dempsey or George Blanda or Al Del Greco or Kevin Butler. FG's and PAT's are almost guaranteed with any of these guys, however, I'd give Jan the nod.
Contemporary K's To Watch - David Akers, Jason Elam, Martin Gramatica, Morten Anderson, Gary Anderson, Orlindo Mare, Sebastian Janikowski, John Carney, and John Kasay.
- KR/PR - *Billy "White Shoes" Johnson* or Desmond Howard. Billy, was one of the most exciting and electrifying players to watch -- he was awesome. Desmond has electrified the field with his amazing returns in the Super Bowl and many regular season games.
Arguments could also be made for Mel Gray or Gale Sayers or Deion Sanders or Darrion Gordon or Rick Upchurch or Brian Mitchell or Michael Bates or Glyn Milburn or Preston Pearson or Eric Metcalf or Ron Brown.
Contemporary KR's and PR's To Watch - Az-Zahir Hakim, Dante Hall, Mike Lewis, Leo Lewis, Derrick Mason, Charlie Rogers, Desmond Howard, Swinton (from the Cowboys), and Brian Mitchell.
- P - *Ray Guy* or Sammy Baugh. Ray was not only a great punter, he was a great athlete.
Contemporary P's To Watch - Rodney Williams, Dan Stryzinski, and Darrenn Bennett.
- RDE - *Bruce Smith* or Fred Dean or Bill Stanfill. Bruce is awesome and most of you probably don't know who Bill Stanfill is. Bill
played for the Miami Dolphins in '70's, he made the Pro Bowl 4 or 5 times. Via an interview I watched with Art Shell, big Art said that the only DE he needed help in blocking was
Bill Stanfill, thus the criteria for placing Bill on this list. Anthony Munoz said Fred was the fastest and best DE he ever faced.
Arguments could also be made for Elvin Bethea or Charles Haley or Lee Roy Selmon or Richard Dent or Claude Humphrey or Rosey Grier or Jim Marshall or Harvery Martin or Fred Dryer.
Contemporary RDE To Watch - Jevon Kearse, Jason Taylor, Joe Johnson, and Hugh Douglas.
- RDT - *William Perry* or Bob Lilly or Alan Page or Joe Klecko. "The Fridge" had a great bull rush and he was a great run stopper. Alan and Bob were incredible and Joe may have been the strongest DT to ever play the game.
Arguments could also be made for Jerry Sherk or Lyle Alzado or Buck Buchanan or Ernie Ladd or Louie Kelcher.
Contemporary RDT's To Watch - Warren Sapp, LaRoi Glover, Bryant Young, and Daryl Gardner.
- Nose Tackle - *Curly Culp*. Curly was the ultimate nose tackle.
Arguments could also be made for Bob Baumhower or Michael Carter.
- LDT - *"Mean" Joe Greene* or Merlin Olson or Randy White or Howie Long -- You pick the starter, it's just too close.
Arguments could also be made for Leo Nomellini or Steve McMichael or Ted Washington or Keith Traylor.
Contemporary LDT's To Watch - Tim Bowens, Norman Hand, Ted Washington, and Keith Traylor.
- LDE - *Reggie White* or Deacon Jones or Ed "Too Tall" Jones or Rich Jackson. Reggie and Deacon are the two greatest pass rushers in NFL history. Yet, there's one problem Ed was probably the most natural pass rusher the game has ever produced and Deacon completely plagiarized Rich.
Arguments could also be made for Gino Marchetti or Doug Atkins or Carl Eller or Jack Youngblood or L.C. Greenwood.
Contemporary LDE's To Watch - Michael Strahan.
- ROLB - *L.T.* (Lawrence Taylor). L.T, the greatest outside linebacker of all time, bar none.
Arguments could also be made for Jack Ham or Derrick Thomas or Ted Hendricks or Hugh Green or Bill Romanowski or Rod Martin.
Contemporary ROLB's To Watch - Bill Romanowski, Jesse Armstead, and Derrick Brooks.
- MLB - *Dick Butkus* or Jack Lamert or Harry Carson or Willie Lainier or Mike Singletary or Ray Lewis or Chuck Bednarik or "Hacksaw" Reynolds. Once again, you pick the starter, it's just too close.
Arguments could also be made for Junior Seau or Hardy Nickerson or Zach Thomas or Nick Buonticonti or Bill Bergey or Tommy Nobis or Ray Nietsche or Sam Huff or Mike Curtis or Lee Roy Jordan or Randy Gradishar.
Contemporary MLB's (ILBs) To Watch - Ray Lewis, Junior Seau, Zach Thomas, and Hardy Nickerson.
- LOLB - *Bobby Bell*. Too close to call. Rickey played for the Saints and 49ers. IMHO, he is the most underrated LB in NFL history. Rickey may have been the strongest
LB to ever play the game. I watched him throw Waltor Payton around like Waltor was a rag doll; keep in mind that Waltor could bench press 550lbs! Bobby and Jack have always been vastly underrated.
Arguments could be made for Rickey Jackson or Chip Banks or Carl Banks.
Contemporary LOLB's To Watch - Donnie Edwards and Dexter Coakley.
- RCB - *Deion Sanders* or Willie Brown or Rod Woodson or Aenas Williams. Deion was the greatest cover man in NFL history WHEN HE WAS HEALTHY. He was the only CB that had consistently shut down Jerry Rice one on one. Willie was the perfect combination of strength and speed. Rod had tremendous speed, instinct, and intelligence. Aenas is Mr. Consistency, he has great anticipation of pass routes and he has surprising speed.
Arguments could also be made for Mel Blount, Nate Odomes, Lem Barney, Louis Wright, James Hasty, Herb Adderly, Raymond Clayborn, and Roger Wherli.
Contemporary RCB's To Watch - Bobby Taylor, Sam Madison, Chris McAllister, Ashley Ambrose, Ronde Barber, and Darrell Green.
- LCB - *Darrell Green* or Mike Haynes or Lester Hayes or "Night Train" Lane or Darrell Green. Mike is probably the greatest all around cornerback. Lester was an all time great character and an awesome cover person. Dick "Night Train" Lane is the 2nd all time leader in career interceptions. Darrel was probably the fastest football player to ever play the game (he won the NFL's fastest man competition four times) and he's the most durable CB in NFL history -- he's played 19 seasons at CB without losing any speed!
Arguments could also be made for Everson Walls or Fred Williamson or Tim McKyer or Mark Collins or Albert Lewis or Dale Carter.
Contemporary LCB's To Watch - Charles Woodson, Duane Starks, Patrick Surtain, Brian Kelley, Troy Vincent, Ray Buchanan, Donnie Abraham, and Aaron Glenn.
- SS - *Ken Houston*. Ken was the greatest athlete of all safeties to ever play the game.
Arguments could also be made for Charlie Waters or Steve Atwater or Darrin Woodson or George Atkinson or LeRoy Butler or Dick Anderson or Donnie Shell or Kevin Ross or Cornell Lake or Dennis Smith.
Contemporary SS's To Watch - Dononvan Darius, Rodney Harrison, John Lynch, Lance Shulters, and Darrin Woodson.
- FS - *Jack Tatum* or *Ronnie Lott* or Paul Krause or Larry Wilson. Jack was the ultimate intimidator and big hitter. Ronnie hit almost as hard as Jack. Paul is the all time leader in career interceptions. Larry rivaled Jack in toughness and pure viciousness.
Arguments could also be made for Jimmy Johnson or Emlen Tunnel or Don Rogers or Willie Wood or Deron Cherry or Kenny Easley or Jake Scott.
Contemporary FS's To Watch - Rod Woodson.
