Great Musicians and Musical Groups
This is my oldest page and I'll get around to updating this some century, that being said, I have very eclectic taste in music. It ranges from Classic Rock to Alternative to Jazz to Punk to Motown to Classical - well, you get the picture.
The pleasure will be all mine if I can help you discover a artist or group you were not aware of beforehand. I
hope you discover something new.
Classic Rock
- Black Sabbath - IMO, the perfect rock and roll band.
- Rush - An amazing progressive rock band, probably my second favorite rock group.
- Yes - The guitar playing of Howe and Squire never ceases to amaze me. They are my second
favorite Classic Rock band.
- Wings - I never get tired of listening to Paul McCartney's singing or music.
- MSG (Michael Schenker Group) - Michael Schenker may be the greatest obscure rock guitarist
of all-time. He never made it big in the States, but boy can this guy play the guitar! Try to locate a copy of MSG's "Live at Budokan" (good luck in trying
to find a copy) and just listen - you'll see what I mean. Michael Schenker is the best live musician I have ever heard.
- The Beatles - Duh, go figure. Let's put it this way, which Beatles song don't I like.
My fav song that they did is a toss up between "Yellow Submarine" and "Let It Be".
- Simon and Garfunkel - The ultimate singing duo.
- Bob Dylan - The answer my friend is blowing in the wind, the answer is blowing in the wind.
- Grand Funk Railroad - One of the all-time greats.
- The Rolling Stones - I like their older stuff better, i.e.
"Jumping Jack Flash," "Street Fighting Man," and "Paint It Black".
- Kansas - IMHO, "Carry On My Wayward Son" is their best song.
- The Moody Blues - They are a little on the weird side, but hey, I like this group. IMHO, "Knights In White Satin" and "Question" are their best songs.
- America - These guys have beautiful singing voices. They're a great mellow band.
- David Bowie - A very creative artist. "Space Oddity" is probably my favorite Bowie
song.
- The Who - My favorite songs by the Who are "Pinball Wizard" and any song on their
"Live At Leeds" album (the old Live At Leeds NOT the re-released one).
- Cream - The original power trio.
- Neil Young - Neil's the man, I'm not worthy.
- The Guess Who - A great band with great songs.
- Three Dog Night - A great "sing along" rock band.
- Crosby, Stills, and Nash - Beautiful voices.
- The Police - I like some of their songs, especially "Message In A Bottle" and "Don't Stand So Close To Me".
- Creedence Clearwater Revival - Who doesn't like this band?
- Chicago - A cool band with cool songs.
Jazz
- Louis Armstrong - Can't go wrong with Satchmo.
- Diana Krall - Her voice is as smooth as silk, her piano playing isn't bad either.
- Miles Davis - Miles got a little bit weird towards the latter part of his career, however, his early work "Kind of Blue" can't be beat.
- The Mahavishnu Orchestra - The coolest fusion jazz. John McLaughlin may be the greatest guiarist of the 20th Century.
- John Coltraine - One of my favorite Be Bop artist.
- Eva Cassidy - Doesn't quite have the voice quality or delivery like Diana Krall, however, she's very good.
World Music
- Ravi Shankar - Sitar music from India -- very cool and great meditation music, too.
- Bob Marley - Who else did you expect?
- Toots and the Maytals - Reggae almost as good as Marley.
- Northern Cree - The best Native American Pow Wow music out there.
Motown, Soul, and 50's through mid 60's Contemporary Music
- Gene Chantler - A one hit wonder. I love "Duke of Earl".
- James Brown - One of my favorites! "OOOOWWWW! I feel good, you know that I should."
- The Four Tops - My favorite oldies rock group.
- The Beach Boys - They should have retired a long time ago, but in their hey day,
they were among the very best.
- Wilson Pickett - Mr. Cool.
- Marvin Gaye - This guy had soul.
- O.C. Smith - He had soul too.
- The Drifters - A cool group.
- The Temptations - Another cool group.
- The Spinners - Yet, another cool group.
- The Platters - Egads, another cool group.
Classical
- Mozart - My favorite classical artist. I think "Eine kleine Nachtmusik" and
"Divertimento in D major K. 136" are his best works.
- Handel - I think "Water Music" is his best - I love this piece.
- Beethoven - My favorite is one of his lesser known works - Symphony #6.
- Bach - Start with his "Brandenburg Concertos." I also like his Haprsicord
Concertos. "Air" from Overture #3 may be the most beautiful piece of music ever written.
- Debussy - La Mer is one of the most beautiful classical music pieces I have
ever heard - it snatches you up and into the music.
- Vivaldi - You can't go wrong with his "Four Seasons" or any of his guitar
Concertos.
- Joseph Haydn - His "Surprise" Symphony is always fun.
- Freidrich Smetana - His "Die Moldau" is a fantastic piece.
Top 40 Contemporary Stuff
- Frank Sinatra - Mr. Cool personified. He had it all - voice, charisma,
persona, magnestism, stage presence, etc. Arguably, he may be the greatest singer of the 20th Century.
- Tony Bennett - Second only to Sinatra?
- The Carpenters - Want to get mellow? Want to cry a little bit? Karen
Carpenter had a absolutely beautiful voice and Richard Carpenter is a great songwriter. Too bad her
life ended the way it did.
Comedy
- Alan Sherman - The original twisted tunes guy. Most of his stuff is not available
on CD, you'll have to find the bulk of it on vinyl. However, some of Alan Sherman's work is available on CD. For example, his "best of" compilations are a great place
to start. This guy was hilarious, a true comic genius.
Who are some of your favorite musicians or musical groups? Let me know.
