3: Joseph III Cheuvront, (s/o Aaron Cheuvront and Sarah Richards) born in Harrison County, Virginia, 1809, m Nov. 1, 1832, OH, Hannah McInnis Rouse, a daughter of Smith Rouse, who was descended from the Pilgrim Miles Standish, immigrant on the Mayflower*. (*information provided by Michael Cheuvront mchevy@earthlink.net) b. Mar 17, 1811 VA, d. 1895, KS.  (following information provided by Michael Cheuvront mchevy@earthlink.net : JosephIII was presumed dead when he disappeared on a trip to Kansas around 1857 or '58 and was never seen again.  Michael Cheuvront has seen a  letter from Vinton --s/o Fredrick Clifton, s/o Lemuel Green 2 Cheuvront--mentioning this event.  This note corroborates information from the 1860 census for Jackson Co VA, in which JosephIII's wife Hanna Rouse is listed as a widow.)

Moses Eugene (s/o Joseph III Cheuvront and Hannah McInnis Rouse), b. 1848, d. 1919. Moses was probably the first family historian, writing letters of inquiry to family members as far back as the 1880s. In 1910, Moses had an article about his great-grandfather, Rev. Joseph Cheuvront, published in a Nebraska newspaper, the Lincoln State Journal, entitled: "Was in Washington's Army; Ancestor of Lincoln Man was Army Chaplin". Many hand-written copies of this article were made and widely circulated across the country, and it became one of the main sources of information about Rev. Joseph Cheuvront for Rev. Wesley L. Cheuvront's "A Brief History of the Cheuvront Family in America."  see info about Moses' Civil War service here.

Further info via Diane Cheuvront Barr: chevie@wi.rr.com:  Moses Elsworth Cheuvront was the son of Joseph Cheuvront III and Hannah Rouse. He was born on November 6, 1846 near Ravenswood, Jackson County, Virginia (now W.V.) He died June 19, 1919 Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska. He is buried at Wyuaka Cemetery in Lincoln, Nebraska. (see photo of headstone)

Moses was a substitute Volunteer in the Union Army. He was paid to take the place of another, one William M. Kline. Moses served in Co. A 7th West Virginia Infantry Volunteers from March 3, 1865 and was honorably discharged from service on June 27, 1865(3months, 25 days of service). He was at Appomattox Courthouse when General Lee surrendered to General Grant. Moses signed his last name as "Chevront" on all of his correspondence with the War Department, pension bureau. This is the way that the government spelled his name on all his forms, so he apparently went along with it in hopes of not causing confusion with the paper work. . After the war he immigrated to Nebraska following his Uncle Lemuel Cheuvront I .  see info about Moses' Civil War service here.

Moses married Vilena Alice Carey on September 10, 1874 in Cass County, Nebraska. Vilena was born September 6, 1858 in Iowa. She died December 13, 1910 in Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska and is buried at the Wyuaka Cemetery.

Moses and his wife are listed in the:

1885/86 Gazetteer of Cass County Businesses:

GREENWOOD
Greenwood, a town of 650 inhabitants, on the B. & M. R. R., is located on the broad level valley of Salt Creek, in the northwestern part of Cass County, of which Plattsmouth, 37 miles distant, is the county seat.

Cheuvront, M. E. - confectionery.
Cheuvront, V. A., Mrs. - dressmaker.
Cheuvront, T. - carpenter.

Sometime after 1886 Moses moved to Lincoln and opened up another confectionery store. When Lemuel II immigrated to Lincoln, Nebraska in 1888 he worked for Moses in the confectionery store.

Moses Elsworth Cheuvront and Vilena Alice Carey had the following children:

James Wiley born November 27, 1875 (see photo)

Byron Elsworth born November 7, 1877 (see photo)

Byron served in the Spanish American War. He was with the 1st Nebraska Volunteer Infantry. The First Nebraska Volunteer Infantry was mustered into service on May 9-10, 1898 at Lincoln, Nebraska. On June 15, the unit steamed for the Philippines, where it arrived on July 17. The fighting ended on August 13 with an armistice and the war formally ended on December 10, 1898 with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. On February 4, 1899 the Philippine American War began.

On July 1, 1899, the First Nebraska left the Philippines for the United States, arriving on July 29, 1899. The unit was mustered out of service on August 23, 1899 at San Francisco, California.

Byron disappeared while walking along the railroad tracks in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was presumed dead on June 23, 1906. Moses had a memorial stone erected for his son Byron Elsworth at Wyuaka Cemetery in Lincoln, Nebraska. Note how the name Cheuvront is spelled.(Lyne, see photo of headstone) Perhaps he had the same problem as his father and how the military chose to spell his name. It is also a bit ironic that Byron should disappear, as did his grandfather Joseph Cheuvront III.

Maude Alice born: April 17, 1879 (see photo)

Edna Gertrude born: June 26, 1881 (see photo)

Tricia born about: October 1886

(the following info via Diane Cheuvront Barr, chevie@wi.rr.com ).  In the 1860 Jackson County Sylvester is listed with his widowed mom (Hannah) at age 16 as a farm hand.  He married in Ritchie Co. to Louisa Cain in 1870:

Lemuel Green[2],  (s/o Joseph III Cheuvront and Hannah McInnis Rouse) b 1833 OH, d. 1906, NE, m. Mary Jane Humphreys.
(following information provided by Michael Cheuvront mchevy@earthlink.net )
Though he was born on the Muskigum River in Ohio, Lemuel later moved to Virginia with his wife Mary Jane (Humphrey),and children. Lemuel fought for the Union side during the Civil War as did his brother Moses, but another brother, Sylvester, was a Confederate soldier. Younger brother Andrew died just before the war.
After the war, the remaining brothers Lemuel, Moses, and Sylvester emigrated to Nebraska (see below). In 1862, Lemuel transcribed the last words of his great-grandfather, Rev. Joseph Cheuvront, from his grandfather, Aaron's original, and this copy was published in a Nebraska newspaper by his brother Moses.  Michael Cheuvront says he still has Lemuel's copy.

In researching Lemuel Green2 in Monroe County, Union, West Virginia, it was found that in 1877 Lemuel is shown in the newspaper records as a constable during this year. Early Virginia/West Virginia Genealogy site shows Lemuel's daughter Elizbeth Ellen's death in Monroe County in 1884; Lemuel is thought to have emigrated to Nebraska in 1888.
