Note: I decided to add this
page to our site after we received an email from Maxine Cheuvront Kisner
regarding Dupuytren's Disease (see below). We thought it might be
interesting to hear from some of the other cousins and see what else might
be out there as far as genetic disorders running in the Cheuvront family.
Barry Cheuvront and Cystic Fibrosis
"I knew Cystic Fibrosis (CF) had to be inherited from both sides.
Besides the one distant cousin on the Chevy side, [& myself], no one
else on either side of my family that I know of has or had CF..."
Barry Cheuvront, bdchevy@yahoo.com
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a chronic, progressive condition
that primarily affects the body's respiratory and digestive systems. It
is due to a gene defect that causes the body to produce abnormally thick
mucous. People who have CF produce abnormally thick, sticky
mucus, which clogs the lungs and leads to recurring lung and sinus infections
and difficulty breathing.
CF occurs in people who have inherited two abnormal copies of a specific
gene, one from each parent. A parent who does not have CF but has one normal
copy of this gene and one abnormal copy is called a CF carrier. The normal
copy dominates, so the parent shows no sign of CF. A child who receives
an abnormal gene from both parents will develop CF. Males and females
are equally likely to inherit CF.
Maxine Kisner: Dupuytren's Disease and Diabetes
"I am a retired registered nurse and have always compiled the health
status of my ancestors. About two months ago I was diagnosed with
a deforming condition of the hands, called Dupuytren's Disease (This is
where the ring and little finger contract toward the palm resulting in
a functional deformity). Imagine my shock at being told this was
a GENTIC disease given to my gene
pool by a male of Northern Europe descent. This, in my
case, could be no other than the Rev. Joseph Cheuvront, the only known
relative in my files from that area !
[In Rev. Joseph's time] the disease is also associated with alcoholism...and/or
[genetically with] diabetes. (could he have been a diabetic?) ...With
my limited knowledge of [Dupuytren's], I have to assume that he, himself,
was troubled (during his latter years of life ) with this crippling disease..."
[Dupuytren's Disease] was first identified in 1831 by Baron Gulliaume
Dupuytren, a celebrated French surgeon. The exact cause of Dupuytren's
Disease is unknown though it may be seen with other connective tissue diseases
and is generally described as GENETIC by hand surgeons. They further
claim that the disease prodominantly affects older males of Northern
Eurpeon descent..."
"...I, too, have developed a pre-diabetic condition, controlled by diet
and exercise. My sister, Mary, has been a diabetic for many years
and has advanced to the state of the disease known as PVD (perpherial
vascular disease). That is where the blood circulation becomes very
poor in the legs and amputation of the lower limb(s) is sometimes
the only cure..."
"The only asset I see in having this disease is knowing that in the
year 2002, we have discovered a genetic flaw handed down through the generations
by the beloved Rev. Joseph F. Cheuvront. He, too, was probably afflicted
with this deformity
and without its appearance in my life, we would never have known this
about him. His personal history has never revealed this imperfection.
"If we have a medical doctor within our vast family, perhaps they would
like to jump in on the jest of this thing. Do other (Cheuvronts)
have this ? If so, how many?"
