Yeah, I'm pretty much a pop culture kind of guy;
but have you ever seen the work of Hieronymous Bosch? Hey, it's pure science
fiction, horror and fantasy! To some degree my interest in art was simply
an outgrowth of my interests in comic books and science fiction and fantasy.
But I have to admit, my arts education means that somewhere inside me there's
a little bit of the art-loving, high culture snob.
My introduction to art appreciation came through my HSC
(year 12) Art class. Jock O'Connell was a good Art teacher, and managed
to get the rudiments of art theory and appreciation across to even
a thick-head like me. Jock's slideshow in Art Theory was always an interesting
experience: the Impressionists, the Pre-Raphaelites, the Expressionists,
the Cubists, the Renaissance artists and more passed before our eyes, accompanied
by Jock's entertaining and enlightened commentary. The wonders of light
and shade, the beauties of colour and line, the ineffable mysteries of form
and content were our's for the taking. Though we all still insisted on pronouncing
Seurat as 'sewer rat'!
