Welcome All,

WE URGE EVERYONE AROUND THE COUNTRY NOT TO PAY A PENNY IN LOCAL CHARGES...

 1. We already pay for the services through VAT.

(In 1978 when domestic rates was abolished VAT was increased from 17% to 21%) and any imposition of a local charge should be instead of, and not in addition to previous charges, as outlined under the ’Polluter Pays’ Principle based on European Legislation.

 2. By Privatising the service we would loose Local Authority jobs...and be charged for the

service...Again !

...So if we all stand together and fight the Government on this...its quite possible that we will win on this issue just like the water charges situation.

As our name suggests we oppose Privatisation and Charges of our Essential Services.

We are a broad based, cross community group made up of Local Resident Representatives and Volunteers who are outraged at the manner in which the underhanded way the Government is putting pressure at Local Government level to introduce Privatisation on Essential Services.

·        We where formed in response to the Drogheda Borough Council essentially Privatising the waste collection and disposal Essential Service in early January 2000.

·        WE have effectively forced Drogheda Borough Council to collect or arrange to collect ALL Domestic Refuse irrespective of payment from 5th December 2001 and instruct Residents not to enter any contract by signing or paying anything to a Private Waste Contractor we have taken further legal action following the privatising of our household waste collection service, and continue to get our waste collected by a Private Contractor arranged by the local authorities irrespective of payment.

·        Our latest legal action has taken us to the High Court on March 14th 2003 to force the local authorities to continue to arrange to collect household waste in the functional area of Drogheda and Louth, irrespective whether Residents enter a personal contract with any private waste contractor.

We continue to stand together, to remove the unjust charge, and forced Privatisation of Essential Services at the sole financial burden of law abiding Residents.

The Country commends the People of Drogheda on their magnificent stand.

Other areas across the country are now contesting the issue.

We are urging everyone NOT to pay the charge...They are paying it already through Value Added Tax (VAT)...SO WHY PAY AGAIN ?

While Privatisation is back on the agenda for now, there is still the question of a 260euro charge for the period of 2002, and we have been successful in forcing mass non-payment of this. Out of 10,000 households in Drogheda only 780 have paid this illegal Bin Tax three years on.   The local authority is effectively beaten on this issue and the Public Representatives won’t represent the public on this issue.

Our campaign is continuing to organise protests at the monthly meetings of the Borough Council.

Recently we had a Demonstration and Rally at the last Corporation Meeting with great

success and continue to increase the pressure on the Local Councillors and officials both actively and with our legal proceedings.

We’ve recently held a very successful fund raising drive, to pay outstanding legal costs, and anticipate further legal costs so give generously.

We will continue to exercise your basic fundamental rights as Citizens of  both Ireland and Europe.

European Environmental Law is on our side.

Latest News Dated March 14th 2003

Today we lodged an application in The High Court with a mandatory injunction against Drogheda Borough Council and Louth County Council to collect or continue to arrange the collection of household waste. Neither of the local authorities turned up and they are presently on notice to lodge their defence affidavit and on notice for the injunction, and they have to appear soon. Further updates will be posted here to inform Citizens of the true position as it developes.

Latest News Dated 31st August 2002

One of our more active campaigners has been taken to court on a “supposed” littering offence and has been fined and bound to the peace, this is a total disgrace and we are appealing this unjust situation.

Our appeal has been successful and the case was dismissed at the Circuit Court in Dundalk, the Judge even commended both the defendant and his colleagues for being Environmentally helpful.

We (the volunteers) still continue to assist Residents who are opposed to this illigal Bin charge, and have disposed of their waste in the Essential Service Bin Trucks between 2nd August 2000 to 14th December 2001, until the Borough Council where Forced by us to collect ALL domestic refuse by legal proceedings issued on 5th December 2001.

Our Secretary has taken both Drogheda Borough Council and the National Government to the European Parliment and the European Commission on this illigal Charge and also on the non-implementation/Enforcement of both Irish and European Environmental Legislation at present.
