It happened last Saturday morning on my way to work. I was a little earlier than usual so I decided to stop at the large, modern supermarket on the corner and look over their magazine section.
As I pulled my Toyota Echo into the large, but almost vacant, parking lot I saw a little old man and a little old woman running across the lot. They both looked straight ahead, and except for the intent look on both of their faces they seemed unaware of each other. I parked my car just outside one of the entrances. I had scarcely gained the door to the store when they pushed past me, actually shoving me out of the way. I was a bit angered by their rudeness, and yet overpowered by a gnawing curiosity. What could they be after? If their goal was as desirous as they made it seem to be, I surely wanted some for myself, so I stopped for a shopping basket.
They scurried past two rows of canned goods and then turned sharply to the right. I followed closely behind with the basket on my arm. Then I saw what they had been after. Bakery goods had been reduced for quick sale, featuring French Bread.
I spent about 15 minutes filling my basket with the items which appeared most delectable. When I was satisfied I turned once more for a final look at the wondrous array. But when I turned back my basket was gone! Several yards from where I stood was the little old lady. In her hand she held my basket with the goods that I had selected.
"I believe you have my basket," I cried.
"Are you calling me a thief ?" responded the indignant old lady." And she ignored me, placing a bottle of White Burgundy and one of Haut-Medoc red wine from Bordeaux in her basket.
"What are you going to do with that French Wine?" I said.
"I am going to enjoy the wine and the French bread in MY basket, together with the Camembert cheese in my refrigerator, and she walked to the cash register.
"This could only happen in Miami," I thought.
